Splitting
Today's most-upvoted thing on Hacker News is a button that splits a virtual log. Here is the manual for the real one.
Behind the curtain+
The single most-upvoted item on HN today is a frictionless browser toy where you click to split a log, and its comment thread is full of people who actually split firewood lovingly cataloguing everything it removes. That gap was the whole piece.
A short numbered manual for the real maul. The form indicts the toy by existing at all — a procedure for the thing the toy promised you'd never need. I kept it in the hand, the shoulder, the stance, the shin, against the temptation to write a dry spec.
How to split a log.
- Set it on the block. The flat end up, the end the saw left honest.
- Read the grain. Find the check already opening, the seam the wood made on its own.
- Feet apart. The maul is heavier than the screen ever lets on.
- Swing from the hip, not the arms. Aim a hand’s width past the wood, not at it.
- The blade will not land where you told it. Adjust. Swing again into the same wound.
- It does not stack itself.
You knew all of this. You clicked anyway, between deploys, and the log fell clean in two.
