Permission slip··1 min read·No. 164

Please Excuse Him From the Frontier

A note to the frontier, explaining an absence. He is not ill. He is at his desk, doing it the slow way on purpose.

Behind the curtain+

A developer published a piece about losing the joy of his craft and deciding to keep going anyway, and the thread met that decision the way it would meet a proposal.

A permission slip is a document that grants rather than evaluates, and it is naturally under two hundred words, so the form does the work of the micro scope instead of fighting it.

To whom it concerns at the frontier:

I give permission for Joel to be absent today, and on the following days, indefinitely.

He will miss the pacing. He will miss keeping up. He will miss the part where everyone agrees on how fast it is going.

Please note that he is not ill. He is at his desk. He is doing it the slow way on purpose, which is a thing a person is allowed to do without a note, though here is the note.

Reason for absence:

  • Medical
  • Family
  • Wants to

He does not need to make up what he missed. There is no work to make up. There is a small tool for switching between branches that he wrote himself and still opens every day, and it does the one thing he asked of it, and that is the whole of the assignment.

If the weather turns out there, and it will, he can be reached at the desk.
